Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (on 1 August 2013)

Summer is in full swing and Facebook activity is ticking up for French mountain resorts: the average monthly fan growth rate for the top 50 in July rose to 3.1%, from 1.4% in June.

Just over 3%, that is, excluding this month’s special case, Alpe d’Huez, which quadrupled its likes early in July by merging two pages: one, its official ‘official’ Facebook page (with some 6,100 likes) and the other, an apparently unofficial ‘official’ one with over 19,000.

The move was spotted at the time and thoroughly reported by Ski Benchmark’s Jérôme Folliet here (in French). Late July, however, the page went offline because of some ‘technical issues’ and still was at the time of writing this, but it is due back up shortly.

A handful of other resorts in the top 50 stand out for their well above-average fan growth rate in July.

First off: Val d’Isère, which has been running a ‘instant win’ competition in the run-up to the Coupe de France MTB event there on 24-25 August.  Its likes got an instant lift and were up 37% for the month, and climbing.

Le Dévoluy has a competition underway too and its likes were up nearly 9%.

Cauterets was also up just under 9%, happy to be out from under the deluge of earlier this spring and showing off its assets in the sunshine, including the Pont d’Espagne, a photo of which got an astonishing 3,400-odd likes and over 500 shares:

It also ran the Trophée de Vignemale trail race and posted a strikingly good photo of the winner which got rather fewer likes, but deserves more.

Le Grand Bornand meanwhile added nearly 8% more likes as it made the most of hosting a Tour de France stage finish. And Chamonix is still climbing steadily, up 7.5% in July.

Please note: these are official pages only and only those resorts are included that have at least some alpine ski uplift capacity, ie a ski lift. Sorry if I’ve missed anyone and please let me know so this list can be improved for next month. Linked resorts/domains like the 3 Valleys are ranked separately and the count was done on the 1st of August.
