Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (2 Feb ’14)

The term ‘pent-up demand’ came to mind as I analysed this month’s top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook. That is, when the demand for something is particularly strong and/or there is a scarcity of supply. Maybe my economics degree is coming in useful after all…

Pent-up demand for powder must have been running high at the beginning of January, after a slow start to the season, snow-wise.

So it should come as no surprise that those resorts that obliged with photos of the white stuff saw their likes spike almost immediately, notably Grand Tourmalet (+30%), Les Menuires (+25%) and Vars (+20%):

Other resorts showing above-average fan growth include La Norma (+42%) – as it wound up its competition to win a holiday – and Chamonix (+25%), which ran a mini-contest for VIP tickets to the Freeride World Tour coming to town.

Average fan growth of all the top 50 ran considerably lower, at 8.9% in January, up just slightly from 8.7% in December. A handful of resorts saw less than a 2% increase in likes.

Here are all the scores, as recorded on the 2nd and 3rd of February, 2014:

Sorry if I’ve missed anyone and please let me know so this list can be improved for next month. Linked resorts/domains like the 3 Valleys are ranked separately and the count was done on 2-3 February.

  4. Hello, well done
It seems however that Val D’isere is missing – thé official Val d’Isère page with more than 30 000 fans and thé Val d’Isère téléphériques page with more than 15 000 fans are not in thé classification. Thank you for your integration!

    • Bonjour Gaye and thanks for your interest and comment! The official Val d’Isère page is there at number 9 in the ranking, but you are right that the Val d’Isère Téléphériques pages is not, although it is a strong page and would be placed in the top 20 by fans. I have limited the ranking to official resort pages only and state this in my blog, thus excluding also the Compagnie du Mont Blanc page with over 50,000 fans and other lift company pages. The reason is mainly that I needed to draw the line somewhere and wanted to keep this ranking focused. Also though, I’m not convinced about the added value of running two pages both broadly about the same thing. Alpe d’Huez last summer merged their resort and lift company pages and are now at no. 10 in my ranking with their merged page. I would be very interested to know more about your communications strategy – perhaps I might contact you directly? Thanks again for your comment et bonne journée, Marita
