Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (2 Dec ’14)

Yep, I think it’s clear from this month’s analysis that fresh snow = more social media engagement for ski resorts.

Just take a look at which top 30 French resorts grew followers most in November and their top tweets for the month:

Les 2 Alpes (+17%)…

and Meribel (+16%)…

Then there’s Alpe d’Huez (+14%), whose most engaging tweet cleverly managed to combine both skiing and the Tour de France:

In fact that was the most RT’d tweet originating in France on that day about anything, according to TopRT.com.

La Plagne (also +14%) gained another place this month and now ranks 6th by total followers.

Meanwhile Megève dropped followers for the eighth month in a row, presumably still spilling some of the ones it gained when it ran a Twitter card promotion last February.

Average follower growth for the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter rose to 8.6% in November (from 5% in October).

So, without further ado, here’s the ranking in full, as compiled on the 2nd of December:

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (2 Nov ’14)

First of all, in acknowledgement of the snow fall yesterday, I’ve changed my header image. Yay, winter is coming! That should wake things up a bit on social media.

In the meantime, here’s a look back at what happened with French ski resorts on Twitter in October. Not a whole lot, it must be said. Average follower growth for the top 30 ticked up to just over 5%, from 4% in September. Better than on Facebook anyway.

La Plagne grew its followers fastest (+17%) and, hmmm, was also one of the biggest movers on Facebook earlier this autumn. What’s going on over there? Well, a contest for a start, to win… a keyring (but a cute one):

And, behind that, a new community manager, since a few months, and a mega new chairlift going in, appropriately called Colosses:

Also running hot (or rather cold) in October was Les 2 Alpes (+10%), which re-opened for skiing on its glacier:

Meribel meanwhile gained nearly 10% more followers as well, even though it only graced us with 5 tweets all month.

Here’s the list in full, as compiled on the 2nd of November:

Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (2 Nov ’14)

What a difference a bit of the white stuff makes! Or the lack of it, in this case…

Two years ago, we had a couple of decent dumps of snow in Octobber and social media were fairly buzzing with #winteriscoming excitement. The top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook grew their fans over 6% in October 2012. This time last year, we had less and fan growth fell to 3%. This October, so far nothing special and only the glacier skiing resorts, Tignes and Les 2 Alpes, could open. Fan growth was just 1.9%.

Pending the peuf, resorts are having to make all their own running and a few are.

Pace-setters this month were La Clusaz (+9%), Serre Chevalier (+8%) and Méribel (+6%).

La Clusaz ran a competition again:

Serre Chevalier anticipated snow and promised a late November opening if possible:

…and Meribel gave fans a glimpse of what is to come:

Outside the top 50 but worth a mention is Flaine, up 11% in October since it started its #Selflaine campaign:

So get snow-dancing and hopefully we’ll see the numbers – and the snow depths – tick up in November.

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter this summer

Looking through the Twitter lens, it’s been a fairly healthy summer for French ski resorts, despite the weather. Follower growth for the top 30 on Twitter June through August averaged 10.7% over the three months, compared to 13.2% last year.

Ten resorts achieved above-average growth, of which:

  • VTT / MTB is a common thread for 4 of them: Les 2 Alpes, Meribel (+16%), Les Gets (+15%) and Tignes (+14%)

Top French ski resorts on Facebook this summer

It’s back to school time – la rentrée in France – and some welcome calm is returning to the mountains. The shopkeepers and hoteliers are taking a well-earned breather and, for the rest of us, there’s still plenty of hiking and cycling to be done, but without the crowds.

It will also – very soon – be time to turn our thoughts to the approaching winter. But before that, let’s take stock of how the summer season went.

This has not been a great summer, it must be said, at least partly due to some dreadful weather. Three out of five professionals in mountain and lake areas in Rhone Alpes judged the frequentation of their establishments insufficient, Rhone Alpes Tourism reports.

On social media, the numbers were down too. The average fan growth of the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook June through August was 3.7% (excluding special case, Orcières, see below), which compares to 6% for the same period last year (excluding another special case, Alpe d’Huez, which merged pages last July).

That said, a few resorts did rather well this summer, despite the challenging conditions. Check out the top five by Facebook fan growth June-August:

  1. Chamonix (+25%)
  2. Cauterets (+18%)
  3. Le Grand Bornand (+17%)
  4. La Clusaz (+17%)
  5. Les 2 Alpes (+9%)

No surprise to see Chamonix up there and Cauterets in the Pyrenees also always does well. The Aravis resorts, La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand, seem to be making a strong play – and a successful one – for summer business, with family festivals, summer press trips and more. And Les 2 Alpes has amazing summer skiing on its glacier of course.

Here are a few of the most engaging posts from around the French mountains this summer:

Meanwhile Orcières has rebranded from Orcières 1850 to Orcières Merlette 1850, taking back the Merlette name it used to be also known by. In so doing it has merged two Facebook pages and jumped up to  21 in the rankings (from 31).

And now for the numbers… Here are all the scores, as recorded on 1 September 2014:

Top 5 French ski domains on Facebook

  1. Portes du Soleil – 115,392 fans

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (4 August ’14)

If it rains, it snows… somewhere, at least. The two biggest movers in the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter this past month took advantage of this fact and their most engaging tweets this past month were about… snow. In July.

Here are Alpe d’Huez (+14%) and Les 2 Alpes (+13%) celebrating winter conditions in summer:

Over in the Pyrenees, Cauterets (+8%) enjoyed some national media attention as it simultaneously welcomed bouquetins and Ségolène Royal, the French ecology, sustainable development and energy minister:

On average, the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter grew their followers 3.8% in July, which is better than on Facebook, but down from the 4.7% growth achieve in July last year.

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (1 July ’14)

French ski resorts are still adding followers faster on Twitter than on Facebook. The top 30 on Twitter averaged 3.5% follower growth in June, compared to 1.1% fan growth for the top 50 on Facebook.

Chamonix (+7%) and Alpe d’Huez (+10%) both feature once again among the most active, adding 300-odd followers in June.

Chamonix boosted its numbers by running a contest…

…and Alpe d’Huez continues to play on its legendary status in the cycling world…

Meanwhile Les 2 Alpes (+11%) was building the buzz for its summer skiing season:

Notably, four of the top 10 growing fastest in June were Pyrenees resorts: Peyragudes (+17%), Cauterets (+6%), Piau (+5%) and Pic du Midi (+5%). Coincidence? Not entirely: all of them also benefit from the communications efforts of N’PY, which represents all those resorts and has been fairly busy, averaging nearly five tweets a day.
