Top French ski resorts on Facebook this season

Tignes, Val Thorens and Orelle are soldiering for another week and the Pic du Midi is still open too, but it’s raining at over 2,000m as I write this and most resorts are gearing up for summer already. Time to round up how the winter season went on social media for the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook.

Winners and losers

So who posted the biggest gains in terms of fan growth this season among the top 50?

Saint Gervais (+156%) after it cleaned up its social media presence and merged the tourist office and lift company pages. Second was Valloire (+69%) which benefited from the JB effect after local hero Jean-Baptiste Grange was crowned slalom World Champion for the second time in a row. And third: Ax 3 Domaines, which hit the 30,000 fans milestone in March. Among the domains, the Grand Massif made good progress (+46%).

At the other end of the scale, Megève lost just under 7% of fans over the season, mostly after Facebook initiated a clean-up of inactive accounts in March.

A season of milestones

This was the season that the first European ski resort hit 200,000 Facebook fans and it was a French one: Val Thorens. Fresh from its success in being voted World’s Best Ski Resort for the second year in a row, Val Tho joins an elite band of North American resorts: Jackson HoleMammoth and Whistler / Blackcomb.

Other resorts hitting milestones this season included La Plagne (50k), Ax 3 Domaines and Saint Lary in the Pyrenees (30k), La Norma (20k), and several at 10k+ : Saint Gervais, Les Saisies, Piau-Engaly and Sainte Foy.

A successful printemps du ski?

This spring’s France Montagnes’ campaign, Le Printemps du Ski, or Skiing into Spring in English, was an attempt to fight back against the erosion of late season business in recent years, not helped by the Easter calendar and late French school holidays. How well did it go?

Well, one particularly active participant in the campaign, Saint François Longchamp, certainly seems to have benefited, at least on Facebook. It finished the season strongly, gaining 10% in March, 24% in April, and scoring nearly 58k views for this video:

Overall, though, the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook grew their fans just 0.9% in April on average, down from 2.6% in April 2014.

A time to thank the fans

Finally, this is a good time for resorts to show their appreciation and thank their fans for their support over the season. Show them some love. Here’s what happens when you do (they appreciate it):

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter this summer

Looking through the Twitter lens, it’s been a fairly healthy summer for French ski resorts, despite the weather. Follower growth for the top 30 on Twitter June through August averaged 10.7% over the three months, compared to 13.2% last year.

Ten resorts achieved above-average growth, of which:

  • 4 are in the Pyrenees – Peyragudes (+27%), Cauterets (+21%), Piau (+19%) and Pic du Midi (+16%)
  • the top 2 are neighbours and rivals – Les 2 Alpes (+36%) and Alpe d’Huez (+29%)
  • VTT / MTB is a common thread for 4 of them: Les 2 Alpes, Meribel (+16%), Les Gets (+15%) and Tignes (+14%)
  • 2 have summer glacier skiing – Les 2 Alpes and Tignes
  • 1 saw the Tour de France come through town… again – Alpe d’Huez
  • and 1 is… Chamonix (+18%)

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (1 July ’14)

French ski resorts are still adding followers faster on Twitter than on Facebook. The top 30 on Twitter averaged 3.5% follower growth in June, compared to 1.1% fan growth for the top 50 on Facebook.

Chamonix (+7%) and Alpe d’Huez (+10%) both feature once again among the most active, adding 300-odd followers in June.

Chamonix boosted its numbers by running a contest…

…and Alpe d’Huez continues to play on its legendary status in the cycling world…

Meanwhile Les 2 Alpes (+11%) was building the buzz for its summer skiing season:

Notably, four of the top 10 growing fastest in June were Pyrenees resorts: Peyragudes (+17%), Cauterets (+6%), Piau (+5%) and Pic du Midi (+5%). Coincidence? Not entirely: all of them also benefit from the communications efforts of N’PY, which represents all those resorts and has been fairly busy, averaging nearly five tweets a day.

Chamonix rivals Val Thorens for most followers on Twitter

It finally happened: Chamonix caught up with Val Thorens to take joint top spot as the French ski resort with the most followers on Twitter.

At least for a short while: when I polled the numbers they were dead level but, after I tweeted it, Val Tho pulled away again slightly. Maybe somebody over there was listening?

Overall, the pre-season is definitely winding up: average follower growth for the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter jumped to 6.6%, from 4.6% in September.

Tignes made the biggest gains by far (+22.9%) as it opened for glacier skiing, a welcome distraction from the pain of losing the X Games.

Alpe d’Huez added 12.4% in October… with a little bit of arm-twisting:

It also seems to be enjoying the Folie Douce effect already:

On that note, the Facebook page for La Folie Douce Alpe d’Huez has already attracted over 1,000 likes in less than a month.

Third biggest climber, Pic du Midi (+12.2%), just made it into the top 30, after it announced that it is going 100% free ride, à la Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix and La Grave.

Here is the full ranking on the 1st of November:

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (on 1 June ’13)

Twitter remains a lot more active for French ski resorts inter-season than Facebook… Is that because it has a bigger professional audience than FB? Or because it’s the season for mountainbikers to come out the woodwork and they tend to be twitterers?

My guess is it’s a bit of both. The late snow this spring has certainly offered plenty of story material for the media, while cyclists of all persuasions are impatient for the cols and bike parks to open.

In any case, follower growth among the top 30 averaged just over 3% again in May, compared to less than 1% for the top 50 on Facebook.

Chamonix grew fastest (+16.7%), bursting into the top 3 and offering plenty of pictures of powder still to be had. It also unveiled what I think was one of the online highlights of the month – a new interactive site on Mont Blanc:

Others too were busy. In fact, here’s the top 5 by follower growth in May:

  1. Chamonix  (+16.7%, rank #1)
  2. Gresse en Vercors (+10.3%, rank #68)
  3. Pic du Midi (+9.9%, rank #37)
  4. Les Contamines (+7.7%, rank #22)
  5. Les 2 Alpes (+7.7%, rank #40)

I would guess Pic du Midi’s performance had at least something to do with the late snow and the fact that the lift stayed open into May for freeriding…

And here’s the full list by total followers:

  1. Portes du Soleil – 1,219 followers
  2. Nouvelles Pyrénées – 1,196
  3. Les 3 Vallées – 956
