Top French ski resorts on Facebook this season

Tignes, Val Thorens and Orelle are soldiering for another week and the Pic du Midi is still open too, but it’s raining at over 2,000m as I write this and most resorts are gearing up for summer already. Time to round up how the winter season went on social media for the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook.

Winners and losers

So who posted the biggest gains in terms of fan growth this season among the top 50?

Saint Gervais (+156%) after it cleaned up its social media presence and merged the tourist office and lift company pages. Second was Valloire (+69%) which benefited from the JB effect after local hero Jean-Baptiste Grange was crowned slalom World Champion for the second time in a row. And third: Ax 3 Domaines, which hit the 30,000 fans milestone in March. Among the domains, the Grand Massif made good progress (+46%).

At the other end of the scale, Megève lost just under 7% of fans over the season, mostly after Facebook initiated a clean-up of inactive accounts in March.

A season of milestones

This was the season that the first European ski resort hit 200,000 Facebook fans and it was a French one: Val Thorens. Fresh from its success in being voted World’s Best Ski Resort for the second year in a row, Val Tho joins an elite band of North American resorts: Jackson HoleMammoth and Whistler / Blackcomb.

Other resorts hitting milestones this season included La Plagne (50k), Ax 3 Domaines and Saint Lary in the Pyrenees (30k), La Norma (20k), and several at 10k+ : Saint Gervais, Les Saisies, Piau-Engaly and Sainte Foy.

A successful printemps du ski?

This spring’s France Montagnes’ campaign, Le Printemps du Ski, or Skiing into Spring in English, was an attempt to fight back against the erosion of late season business in recent years, not helped by the Easter calendar and late French school holidays. How well did it go?

Well, one particularly active participant in the campaign, Saint François Longchamp, certainly seems to have benefited, at least on Facebook. It finished the season strongly, gaining 10% in March, 24% in April, and scoring nearly 58k views for this video:

Overall, though, the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook grew their fans just 0.9% in April on average, down from 2.6% in April 2014.

A time to thank the fans

Finally, this is a good time for resorts to show their appreciation and thank their fans for their support over the season. Show them some love. Here’s what happens when you do (they appreciate it):

Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (on 2 May 2013)

Average fan growth of the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook slowed to 1.5% in April, as many resorts pulled the plug on winter and took a welcome inter-season breather.

Only two resorts saw double-digit fan growth: Val d’Isère (up 11%) and Sainte Foy (up 15%), both of which ran competitions that continued into April.  A few resorts have even lost some fans.

So it will be interesting to see who keeps the buzz going best as summer approaches, and how. As it stands, quite a few resorts haven’t even changed their timeline cover photos yet…

Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (on 1 Mar ’13)

The top 5 French ski resorts on Facebook on the 1st of March are unchanged from a month ago but can you guess who the top 5 are by fan growth this past month?

Here they are:

  1. Aussois (+460%)
  2. Les Contamines (+65%)
  3. Le Dévoluy (+52%)
  4. Sainte Foy (+50%)
  5. Méribel (+40%)

Of these, Aussois, Le Dévoluy and Sainte Foy have been running competitions with various prizes on offer. Méribel hosted the women’s FIS World Cup and did an excellent job of covering it both on Facebook and its new twitter account.

As for Les Contamines, it seems to have built up a good buzz ahead of the French holidays and also reported on the successes of its home-grown champions: Marie Marchand-Arvier, 3rd in the Méribel downhill, Coline Mattel who podium-ed in World Cup ski jumping, and Antoine Bouvier, winner of a World Cup telemark race. (Declaration of interest here: I live in Les Contamines and write for their webzine occasionally as web ambassador!)

Meanwhile Val Thorens continues to gain on table leader Megève, and at this rate should hit the 100,000 fans mark in March. By the way, two Andorran resorts (which are not tracked here as they aren’t French) are already there: Grandvalira and Vallnord.

Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (on 1 Feb ’13)

January is traditionally a time for lots of promotional activity in ski resorts – press visits, Grand Ski, and so on – and yes, it looks like several resorts have been plenty busy in social media over the past month as well.

In Sainte Foy fans are up five-fold, admittedly from a low base of 500-odd, but still. It’s snowing competitons on its facebook page, with three running at the moment as far as I can see, each offering a voucher for a week’s stay for 4 to the winner. They run until April so expect more progress up the rankings to come.

Vars (+72%) has been running a competition too, getting its fans up to the 6,000 mark just before it hosted the FIS World Speed Skiing Championships. And so has Châtel (+43%).

As for Valmorel (+77%), I can’t find any trace of ‘buying’ likes there. They hosted a ski alpinism race in January though, the Doucy Cîmes, featured in a piece on France 3 TV, held a snowshoeing festival and offered reduced rates on day passes.

No changes in the top 5, but Val Thorens is continuing to creep up on Megève, and gained 20% more fans in January.  Here’s the full list:
