Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (2 Mar ’15)

What a difference a day makes. This month I polled the numbers for the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter on the 2nd of March instead of the 1st and, in that time, Alpe d’Huez added another 1,000-odd followers (+13%), following a Twitter card promotion.

They are not the only resort that has been active on social media recently and the word ‘gagner’ came up often as I scouted around this past month.

Val d’Isère grew its followers 44% in February and has certainly stepped up its tweeting since the start of the year.

Other climbers in February were Courchevel (+21%), Tignes (+18%) and La Plagne (+17%). Follower growth for all the top 30 last month averaged just under 10%, down from 13% in January.

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (2 Dec ’14)

Yep, I think it’s clear from this month’s analysis that fresh snow = more social media engagement for ski resorts.

Just take a look at which top 30 French resorts grew followers most in November and their top tweets for the month:

Les 2 Alpes (+17%)…

and Meribel (+16%)…

Then there’s Alpe d’Huez (+14%), whose most engaging tweet cleverly managed to combine both skiing and the Tour de France:

In fact that was the most RT’d tweet originating in France on that day about anything, according to TopRT.com.

La Plagne (also +14%) gained another place this month and now ranks 6th by total followers.

Meanwhile Megève dropped followers for the eighth month in a row, presumably still spilling some of the ones it gained when it ran a Twitter card promotion last February.

Average follower growth for the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter rose to 8.6% in November (from 5% in October).

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (2 June ’14)

There were two changes in top five French ski resorts on Twitter in May.

Chamonix (+4%) overtook Val Thorens to take second spot behind Megève. Chamonix typically doesn’t slow down as much as other resorts in the inter-season and, in town the other day, it was easy to see why: while people are sunning themselves at café tables in t-shirts and shorts, others are walking past off the Montenvers train in full ski gear with skis on their shoulders. There’s not much inter-season in Chamonix.

Meantime Alpe d’Huez (+11%) overtook Val d’Isère to sneak fourth place (up from 19th at the start of the year). It continues to trade on its reputation in the cycling world and is gearing up for the mega Dutch charity event in early June, Alpe d’HuZes.

Megève, by the way, shed followers for the third month in a row, down another 120 or 1.4% in May from its Twitter Card-induced high.

Average follower growth for the whole top 30 on Twitter dropped to 2.4% in May, from 3.1% in April.

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter this season

As French ski resorts tot up their skier days this past winter, I can already report that in one measure, at least, performance has been exceptionally healthy.

The top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter saw a 66% increase in followers this winter on average (1 December-1 May), compared to +36% for the top 50 on Facebook.

Here are the five who grew their follower base the most:

  1. Megève (+574%)
  2. Alpe d’Huez (+222%)
  3. Méribel (+109%)
  4. Avoriaz (+79%)
  5. Les Gets (+66%)

Of these, Megève ran a Twitter card campaign in February that saw it quadruple its followers in the space of a month. A few have since been drifting away (followers were down 2% in April).

Alpe d’Huez, meanwhile, has achieved its growth organically, since it set up a new team of community managers at the start of the season. It has been getting monster RTs recently for cycling-related tweets as the biking season gets underway:

Other random facts:

  • Pyrenees resorts were among the most dynamic with 5 among the top 12 biggest gainers, led by Cauterets (+65%)
  • Outside the top 30, Saint Gervais (+377%, rank 65) and Samoëns (+293%, rank 57) have made great strides
  • 11 French resorts now have 2,000+ followers, up from just 1 – Val Thorens – a year ago (official accounts only, in French and/or English)
  • 25 have at least 1,000 followers, up from just 11 this time last year
  • 2 resorts have English-language accounts in the top 10, both ranked higher than their French language accounts: Serre Chevalier and Morzine

Looking just at this April, average follower growth for the top 30 Twitter dropped to 3.1%, from 6.1% in March.

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (on 1 April ’14)

Alpe d’Huez once again stands out as one of the fastest growing French ski resorts on Twitter, adding 33% more followers in March. Since it put in place a new community manager arrangement, it has jumped from 19th in the ranking in December, to 7th now.

This past month, despite the one fresh dump of snow we had, spring fever has been building and Alpe d’Huez cleverly tapped into that by starting to talk about cycling. Check out its most retweeted tweets in March:

Which ski resort just quadrupled its Twitter followers?

While Facebook is starting to look fairly mature and steady as a platform for French ski resorts, over on Twitter it is all still happening. Just take a look at who (out of the top 30) grew the fastest in February and by how much:

  1. Megève (+426%)
  2. Avoriaz (+36%)
  3. Les Contamines (+29%)
  4. Alpe d’Huez (+22%)
  5. Méribel (+15%)

Yes, that’s right: Megève more than quadrupled its followers in February! The resort, whose VP Tourism is e-reputation expert Jean-Marc Seigneur, has been quick to take advantage of Twitter’s newly launched ‘tailored audiences’ retargeting capability, issuing a (promoted) Twitter card:

The promotion targets audiences that are likely to be interested in mountain tourism and the Megève brand, explains newly appointed community manager Etienne Marin, and is part of Megève’s overall e-reputation and ‘smart ski resort’ strategy, which includes the We Are Megeve platform

The resort has also launched a new English-language twitter account:

…although not one yet in Russian. Playing around with analytics on Followerwonk shows that the resort has almost as many Twitter followers tweeting in Russian as in English:

megeve twitter graph

Elsewhere, Alpe d’Huez continues to reap the benefits of its new community manager set-up and Les Contamines also looks dynamic, with its web ambassador programme well into its second year.

Serre Chevalier, which is one of only two resorts with two Twitter accounts in the top 20 (the other being Morzine) is currently recruiting web ambassadors, or social reps as it calls them and has swapped around its twitter names so that @serrechevalier is now the French language account, while the English language one has become @serreche_uk.

Overall, average follower growth for all the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter soared to 23.4% including Megève, and held roughly steady at 9.5% excluding them (compared to 9.8% in January).
