Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter this season

Not only did this season see a French ski resort become the first in Europe to reach 200,000 likes on Facebook, it also saw the first reach 20,000 followers on Twitter: Alpe d’Huez.

Now I know it’s all about the quality not the quantity of the social media engagement, but still… In the case of Alpe d’Huez, which has grown its followers 197% this season (1 Dec-1 May), it does at least partly have to do with its success in playing to its reputation as both a winter and a summer destination and not a little with the fact that it will be a Tour De France finish yet again in 2015.

This was its most RT’d tweet in April:

Other resorts reaching milestones this season were Val Thorens and Val d’Isère which both broke through 10,000.

Who grew their followers the most?

It was not, in fact, Alpe d’Huez that grew its followers the fastest this winter season among the top 30 French resorts on Twitter. These were the top three:

  1. Courchevel (+260%)
  2. Val d’Isère (+200%)
  3. Alpe d’Huez (+197%)

Tweeting into spring

Finishing strongest in April was Val d’Isère (+11%), followed by Tignes (+5%), even though the latter tweeted barely more than a dozen times over the month.

Overall, the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter averaged just 2% follower growth in April, down from over 6% in March, and also lower than this time last year (3.1%).

Season average growth was 62% (1 Dec-1 May), compared to 66% last season.

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (4 Apr ’15)

The Easter chocolates and snow conditions were too good to ignore – hope you enjoyed them too and sorry this update is a bit late as a result!

In the meantime, Alpe d’Huez has hit another milestone, breaking through 20,000 Twitter followers (+44% in March), while Val d’Isère (+29%) reached 10,000.

Alpe d’Huez continues to be active on the promotion front, running one jointly with Confluence, and it is also starting to see the buzz building for its annual Alpe d’HuZes charity cycling event:

Val d’Isère (+29%) hosted the GEM Altigliss Challenge student ski and snowboard world cup:

Courchevel (+13%) and La Plagne (+11%) were the other double-digit climbers in March, the latter running a photo contest:

Top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter (2 Mar ’15)

What a difference a day makes. This month I polled the numbers for the top 30 French ski resorts on Twitter on the 2nd of March instead of the 1st and, in that time, Alpe d’Huez added another 1,000-odd followers (+13%), following a Twitter card promotion.

They are not the only resort that has been active on social media recently and the word ‘gagner’ came up often as I scouted around this past month.

Val d’Isère grew its followers 44% in February and has certainly stepped up its tweeting since the start of the year.

Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (on 1 Feb ’15)

It’s day 5 of the big snowstorm and it’s still snowing! Social media is deluged with pictures of peuf and smiling faces… as well as avalanche warnings.

The biggest mover in the Facebook rankings this past month was Val d’Isère, which has quietly climbed into third spot, from 9th before the winter began. It grew its fans 26% in January, hosting the Coupe d’Europe and also a classical music festival, though, as usual, the most engaging posts included photos of snow:

Les Menuires (+21%) was the second fastest growing, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary all this season (with a competition):

Les Gets (+20%) also grew strongly with posts like this:

The moral of that post is don’t forget to post video now and then.

Meantime, Whistler Blackcomb reached 200,000 Facebook fans in January while Val Thorens is still on track to get there sometime in February but just under 3,000 likes shy as I write this.

Now for the stats. Fan growth of the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook in January averaged 5% (down from 6% in December and 8% in November). Just 14 resorts showed above average growth, while eight in the top 50 grew their fans by less 2% this past month.

Top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook (1 Dec ’14)

Winter is here… sort of. It promised well a couple of weeks ago after a snowstorm blanketed social media with glorious images of fresh powder and even fresh tracks for a while. But since then… nothing much.

Average fan growth for the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook ticked up to just over 8% in November, from under 2% in October. Only four in the top 50 did better than that, however.

Val d’Isère is the stand-out story this month, growing its fans by a third to leapfrog into fourth spot. Fresh snowfall, the promise of early opening and the Criterium de 1ere Neige all boosted its buzz.

Then there’s the hackathon it is running all this week to develop a new resort app – high-concept, high-profile, ‘the highest hackathon in the world’:

Elsewhere, Risoul has had a makeover on social media and popped up this month in 41st spot, just in time to take advantage of the new snow:

Ditto Val Cenis, which jumped to 44th:

Le Lioran was the only other resort reporting above-average growth (+9%), after it launched a new, responsive website:

That’s it for now. Keep snow-dancing! Here are all the scores, as recorded on 1 December 2014:

Top French ski resorts on Facebook this season

As an inter-season calm settles on ski resorts – except for the few that are still open, that is – it is time to take stock of how the winter season went on social media.

So I took the top 50 French ski resorts on Facebook on the 1st of May by number of fans and ranked for who grew their fans the most over the entire 2013-14 season. Would you guess these five?

  1. La Norma (+125%)
  2. Chamonix (+114%)
  3. Les Menuires (+96%)
  4. Métabief (+92%)
  5. Val d’Isère (+88%)

Admittedly, three ran contests to ratchet up their fans: La Norma and Val d’Isère in December, and Chamonix in January and again later in the season as part of its Lady by Chamonix campaign.

But Les Menuires and Métabief seem to have got there organically.

Les Menuires made a strong start to the season with posts like this:

Snowy Les Menuires

…and then never looked back, though it tailed off in March and April:

Menuires FB stats

It is no coincidence that it also relaunched its website this season, tying it in more closely with its social media channels.

Métabief, in the Jura, overcame challenging snow conditions to nearly double its fan base:

Metabief FB post

Overall this past month, average fan growth of the top 50 slowed right down to 2.6% in April, from 5.8% in March.

Later on this year, I’ll be checking on who grew fastest over the summer season. Some resorts are off and running with new summery cover photos already, but others are still stuck with winter scenes, so expect quite some variation.

L’embarras du choix

This is a schizophrenic time of year for ski resort marketers on social media: do you keep talking about skiing till the very end, or start building a buzz about summer?

Well, judging by my Twitter feed at the moment, you can take your pick.

So… will it be winter?

…or summer?

Or, wait a minute, how about both? That’s the great thing about springtime in the mountains…
